Northumberland is, quietly, one of the best golfing counties in England — links along the coast, heathland in the Tyne Valley and a handful of underrated parkland courses inland. Out on the Fairway has members from Morpeth, Hexham, Alnwick and Berwick, and we'd happily welcome more.
How it works
Members coordinate rounds in our private Facebook group. Post when you want a game. Someone in your part of the county will usually say yes — and if not this week, then next.
Courses worth knowing
The coast
- Bamburgh Castle Golf Club — arguably the most photogenic golf course in England, with the castle on one side and the Farne Islands on the other.
- Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club — classic links at Embleton Bay, James Braid layout.
- Alnmouth Golf Club — England's fourth-oldest course, heathland-meets-links above the Aln estuary.
- Goswick Links — championship links near Berwick-upon-Tweed, a hidden gem.
Inland & Tyne Valley
- Morpeth Golf Club — friendly parkland a short hop north of Newcastle.
- Hexham Golf Club — stunning Tyne Valley views, well worth the drive.
- Matfen Hall — country-house golf 20 minutes from Newcastle.
- Alnwick Castle Golf Club — heathland just outside Alnwick.
It works as a county-wide group
Distances can be real — Hexham to Berwick is two hours. We don't pretend otherwise. People mostly play near where they live, and post when they fancy a trip elsewhere. The Facebook group makes it easy to find someone going your way.
